Volcano a Day | Eldfjall a dag
March 20th 2021 - 6th August 2021 Fagradalsfjall, Iceland
Volcano a Day is a project that sprung forth with the eruption in Fagradalsfjall 2021. I was so facinated by the eruption that I decided to paint one painting a day of the volcano while it remained active, or at least for a 100 days.
The first 50 paintings were painted every single day and cover the first 50 days of the eruption from the 20th March-8th May. At that point the eruption had started to stabilise and looked very similar most days, so for the next 50 paintings, Amy picked out the most interesting days to paint. Amy went to the volcano twice to paint on location 'en plein air' but the other paintings were painted through RÚV and MBL's webcams.

Day 12 - on location
On day 12, 31st March I hiked to see the eruption with my own eyes and painted these on location.
Painting on location in Nátthagi
On the 20th June 2021 I painted on location again - this time in Nátthagi valley where the lava was flowing into. Even though I couldn’t see the crater itself it was amazing seeing all the lava! Again what struck me was the smell, the smoke, the crazy texture of the cooled lava and the sounds - the crackling and the occasional surprising pop!
